The Canopy Link
Singapore Botanic Gardens
Gallop Extension (2022)
Connecting the main entrance of the Gallop Extension to the Bambusetum of the Learning Forest, the elevated pedestrian linkway's design is inspired by the organic meandering footpaths found in gardens of the English Landscape Movement. From the regional lowland forest habitat at the Learning Forest to the ridge top habitat at Rambler's Ridge, the linkway provides a seamless crossing between the two sides of the Gardens for people and wildlifem blending into the forest landscapes both ecologically & aesthetically.
From the lowest point at the Bambusetum area, the 200-meter-long meandering link gradually elevates to 6-meters above Tyersall Avenue, providing varying views of the Learning Forest and Gallop Extension at different heights. The linkway's deck is tapered on both ends to visually diminish the thickness of the structure, creating a paper-thin linkway that floats effortlessly. The supporting columns, designed to mimic "seed" profiles, are spaced further apart to further complement the intended "floating" effect. In addition, the extruded form of these "seed" columns were designed with recessed slots on both ends to receive electrical installations such as wiring and light luminaires.
Upon entry into the Gallop Extension, visitors on the viewing deck will be greeted with the splendour of the existing forest that links to the Johore Sultan's land before trekking downhill to the Visitor Centre to commence their visit.
